CosmoAtlas / 6–8 months
A full-stack scientific platform for exploring cosmic hierarchies, astronomical scale, cosmological theories, guided journeys, and AI-powered scientific reasoning.
Overview
CosmoAtlas is designed for astrophysics students, science communicators, educators, amateur astronomers, space enthusiasts, and theoretical physics researchers who need more than static astronomy articles or an unstructured AI chat window.
Challenge
The situation before the engagement, in the client's terms.
Astronomy learners and researchers had to combine static articles, specialist simulation tools, and unstructured AI chat to understand cosmic hierarchy, scale, traversals, and theoretical models together.
It was difficult to see how local structures such as Earth and the Solar System nest inside the Milky Way, Laniakea, and the Observable Universe.
Static search could describe objects but could not guide users through a meaningful physical path from one cosmic entity to another.
A general-purpose chatbot can blur the distinction between observed structures, supported models, theoretical geometries, and speculative ideas.
AI prototypes often place provider credentials in browser code, creating avoidable security and operational risks.
Objectives
What the build needed to achieve before implementation began.
Model a unified cosmic knowledge graph across astronomical scales
Make exponential scale, chronology, and cosmic relationships explorable in real time
Secure Claude model reasoning behind server-side structured API endpoints
Enable Atlas AI to dispatch typed navigation and comparison actions into the UI
Distinguish observed, supported, theoretical, hypothetical, and speculative knowledge
Preserve complete functionality through deterministic local astrophysical fallbacks
Solution Design
The approach that addressed each challenge above.
CosmoAtlas unifies graph topology, scale, chronology, theory comparison, guided traversal, and secure AI reasoning behind one responsive application architecture.
Typed astronomical entities and relationships provide exact hierarchy, adjacency, physical metadata, scientific consensus, and mystery context.
The AI copilot returns typed actions such as NAVIGATE, HIGHLIGHT_PATH, COMPARE, and SCALE_TO instead of unstructured chat alone.
The scale navigator and canvas camera make astronomical magnitude understandable through interactive zoom, targeting, and orbital context.
Schema-enforced explanations, reports, comparisons, and local fallbacks preserve consistent output shapes and scientific status labels.
Express proxies Claude model calls server-side while deterministic datasets preserve usability during missing-key, network, or rate-limit failures.
Capabilities
What CosmoAtlas does in day-to-day use.
Explore relationships from Earth and the Solar System through galaxies, superclusters, cosmic phenomena, and theoretical cosmological models.
Use structured Claude model responses to answer scientific questions and dispatch navigation, path highlighting, theory comparison, and scale actions.
Traverse 27 orders of magnitude from human and planetary dimensions to the cosmological particle horizon.
Move through a 13.8-billion-year timeline or launch narrated routes from Earth to Sagittarius A* and other cosmic destinations.
Generate structured trans-cosmic reports with trajectory waypoints, physical boundaries, evidence, and unresolved mysteries.
Keep Claude model credentials server-side and fall back to deterministic astrophysical knowledge when API keys or network access are unavailable.
Technology Stack
Outcome
What changed for the business after launch.
27
Orders of magnitude
The scale experience traverses from human and planetary dimensions to the cosmological particle horizon.
6
AI endpoints
Status, explain, path, Atlas, report, and theory-compare services are exposed through a structured Express proxy layer.
4
Atlas UI actions
The copilot can navigate, highlight paths, compare theories, and move the scale camera through typed commands.
0
Client-side API keys
Claude model credentials remain server-side while deterministic astrophysical fallbacks keep the experience available without a key.
Interface
Screens from the delivered system.
Conclusion
CosmoAtlas combines a secure server-side Claude proxy, structured JSON responses, an interactive cosmic graph, procedural 2D canvas visuals, guided journeys, and local astrophysical fallbacks. The result is an educational research surface that makes cosmic scale, hierarchy, chronology, and theoretical models easier to explore without exposing API credentials to the browser.
